Marshall County Sheriff Kevin Byars has confirmed that escaped inmate Dakota W. Reeder has been apprehended.

Byars said the department received notice Monday that Reeder, who walked away Nov. 13 from the Class D facility in Benton, had been arrested and was awaiting extradition from Shelby County Detention Center in Shelbyville. Shelby County Sheriff’s Department deputies arrested Reeder this weekend, detention center staff confirmed.

Shelby County Sheriff’s Department Maj. Eric Hettinger said deputies were familiar with Reeder and his possible whereabouts. Once the department was aware of the warrant for his arrest, deputies were able to locate him easily.

“We went out there to check on him and he was there, and they were able to take him in without incident,” Hettinger said. “Nothing major, nothing exciting. He just, he basically went back home.”

Additionally, Byars said a 1500 white Dodge Ram pickup truck reported stolen Nov. 14 from Gerald Chambers & Sons had been recovered. The vehicle was allegedly taken the evening before, shortly after Reeder’s escape. Detectives suspected Reeder had stolen the vehicle.

“The truck was found, I don’t know exactly where they found it but I assume it was up there in the same area,” Byars said. “Actually, a (Kentucky) Fish and Wildlife officer found the truck, undamaged. I’d say, probably, he just ran it out of gas and parked it somewhere. But it was completely undamaged and they’re going to get it back.”

Byars said the department had not yet retrieved Reeder from Shelby County but was making arrangements to do so.

Reeder, 20, of Simpsonville, about 8:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 13, left the Marshall County class D facility in Benton, prompting a statewide bulletin.

“My understanding is that … he was assigned to that class D facility,” Kentucky State Police Post 1 Public Information Officer Jody Cash said in a previous interview. “I honestly don’t know the specifics of the security of that building, but my belief is that he just walked off from there.”

Kentucky State Police was investigating the incident.
