KSP Unveils New Drug Education Trailer

FRANKFORT, Ky. (Jan. 22, 2019) – The Kentucky State Police have introduced a new mobile substance abuse education exhibit designed to help inform the public about the devastating effects of substance abuse.

The 30-foot trailer features 14 flat screen monitors and one touch-screen monitor that present video messages about meth, heroin, marijuana, alcohol and tobacco. The videos include actual meth users who tell their real-life stories illustrated by before-and-after images that show the dramatic visual progression of their drug abuse.

The exhibit also makes use of two showcase displays to highlight examples of a variety of drug paraphernalia and meth-related items.

“Education is a crucial aspect of mitigating the drug problem,” says Lt. Col. Jeremy Slinker, director of the KSP Operations Division. “This exhibit is an excellent vehicle for initiating conversations about drugs among young people and adults.”

“The images in the exhibit are not pretty because there is nothing pretty about drug abuse,” he adds. “However, drug abuse is present here in Kentucky and cannot be ignored.”

The exhibit was funded by a $92,000 grant from the Kentucky Office of Drug Control Policy and was designed and built by DCX Displays in Louisville.

“This innovative exhibit is designed to raise awareness on many levels – addiction, detection, recognition, treatment and, we hope, prevention,” says Sgt. Josh Lawson, commander of the KSP Public Affairs Branch.

“Sometimes, adults are uncomfortable talking to children about drugs and other harmful behaviors,” he notes. “This display acts as a useful educational resource to start this vital two-way communication process between young people and adults.”

The mobile exhibit is now available for use by schools, clubs, civic organizations, businesses, churches, local governments and communities throughout the state. To schedule the display, contact the Public Affairs Officer at the KSP post closest to your location or call the KSP Public Affairs Branch at 502-782-1780.

Tyrese Jones 20, of Paducah was arrested Friday afternoon on a charge of first-degree assault and David Knight Jr. 19, of Benton, KY, was arrested this morning on a charge of first-degree assault and first-degree robbery

Paducah police were called to a local hospital Sunday evening, Jan. 27, in reference to a man who had been shot. Investigators were unable to interview the victim, who was identified as Darrius Wesley.

During the transaction, an altercation ensued and a gun was produced. There was a struggle between Knight and Jones, the gun went off and Wesley was shot.

Wesley was taken to Baptist Health Paducah, and transferred to an out-of-state hospital for treatment. He remains in critical but stable condition.

On February 8, 2019, The United States Marshalls Service and the Calloway County Sheriff’s Office began jointly looking for a wanted fugitive, 37 year old Jesse Derrick Branham. Branham was wanted for violating federal probation.

At approximately 12:30am on February 9th, deputies received information that Branham was at the Murray Inn and Art Gallery (formerly the Murray Plaza Inn) on S. 12 Street and officers from a number of law enforcement agencies converged on the suspect’s room. Shortly after law enforcement arrived, the suspect came to the door, opened it and pointed a handgun at deputies. After hours of negotiating, Branham came out of the room with his girlfriend and child and again pointed the weapon at officers who were attempting to retrieve the girlfriend & child. After several attempts to get the girlfriend and child released, both were removed safely from the room.
